In Roman mythology, Janus was the god of dawn and dusk—always looking in two directions at once. It is this dual nature that Bertil Vallien has returned to again and again since the mid-1990s. In the sand-cast head Janus, one half is awake while the other sleeps—not as a contradiction, but as a conversation, an ongoing dialogue between two states. Sand casting is the technique Vallien has long made his own—raw, poetic, far from the polished elegance of crystal. In Janus, the glass carries something quiet and enigmatic, much like the myth from which it is drawn. Janus is produced in Kosta in a limited edition of 100 pieces and is mounted on a granite base.
